Rose Hilton, 'Sleeping Figure' 1990
This etching is by Rose Hilton (1931-2019). Hilton was a Modern British artist who lived in Cornwall with her husband, Roger Hilton, also a painter. The two were amongst the notorious St Ives set. However, Roger Hilton discouraged Rose's painting, maintaining a beleif that wives should go no further than the kitchen. It was only untill his death 1975 when she began to paint again and arguably became the more influential painter by the end of her life and continues to be sought after. This particular work is dated after her husband's death and is from the portfilio 'Ten Etchings' comissioned to raise money for the Tate, St Ives.
